According to the CyberEdge 2017 Cyberthreat Defense Report, 79 percent of respondents were affected by a successful cyberattack in 2016—and 61 percent expect to be hit again in 2017! That the majority of respondents expect to fall victim to cyberattack this year is an extremely telling fact about the current state of cybersecurity, and it is only one of countless attention-grabbing items contained within the fourth annual Cyberthreat Defense Report, which surveyed 1,100 IT security decision makers from around the world. Other notable takeaways include:
- Insider threats are a top concern: For reasons both intentional and unintentional, your users are a major security threat. Whether it’s due to low security awareness, lack of ability to monitor privileged users, or deliberate insider threat action, your users are a weak point in your security strategy.
- Under-protected endpoints: For the fourth consecutive year, endpoint devices have been named as IT security’s weakest link.
- Problems with patch management: Less than a third of survey respondents are confident that their patch management process effectively mitigates the risk of exploit-based malware.
- Rampant ransomware: Ransom payments are only one of the dangers of ransomware. Even if your business never pays, you’re still at risk of data loss, revenue loss, recovery costs, reputation damage, and productivity loss.
