Late last week, gamers of all kinds at Code42 participated in Extra Life, a charitable event during which gamers pledge to play games for 24 hours straight, stream their efforts online, and solicit donations from friends and family. Money raised by the event goes directly to the Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals, including Minneapolis-based Gillette Children’s Specialty Healthcare. We were particularly excited to help our local hospital, as giving back to our community is an important part of our company culture.
We are thrilled to report that we didn’t just hit our financial goal of $9,042–we exceeded it. As of this writing, Team Code42 has raised $10,018 for Gillette Children’s Specialty Healthcare! We were also visited by two local television news crews. You can see one of the newscasts here.
Taking advantage of our Volunteer Time Off program, which grants every Code42 employee two days per year to use for volunteer opportunities, our fundraiser kicked off with a small crew at 10 p.m. Thursday night. This first shift started off the event stream with several hours of Destiny 2, some Rocket League and Playerunknown’s Battleground. Most of the Team Code42 crew came online at 8 a.m. Friday, and the new players brought with them some new activities. A group of gamers calling themselves “Gnome42” started a 24-hour World of WarCraft campaign, with every player using a level 1 gnome character. By the end of their 24-hour game, most players had reached level 60 or higher.
In one conference room at our Code42 headquarters, gamers played a 24-hour Dungeons and Dragons campaign. And in the main conference room location, Team Code42 members hauled in game consoles and custom-built PCs for many more hours of video games. The team’s Twitch stream rotated across the various player groups throughout the night. We’re pleased to say that we had an online audience for most of the whole 34-hour event–even in the dead of night!
Team Code42 made it through their 24-hour shifts thanks to lots of water, coffee, snacks and a few well-deserved short breaks. Highlights from the event include some particularly frenzied Rocket League matches, deliveries of pizza, sandwiches, and donuts from Code42 coworkers and the news crew visits.
We want to sincerely thank everyone who donated to our Extra Life event. If you meant to donate but didn’t get to it, there’s still time.
Thank you so much for supporting our team’s efforts!
